Home Theater audio clicks when any electric device is changed, lights, appliances, etc. Why? How to fix?
Question by BoredBeyondBelief: Home Theater audio clicks when any electric device is changed, lights, appliances, etc. Why? How to fix?
My house was built in 1973. Previous owners wired the living room for surround (poorly). For example, if the surround sound is on for a DVD and you turn on a light in the kitchen, the audio system sound cycles, coming back on normally within about 2-3 seconds. Turning on the lights or even the AC system coming on will cause this.
Is there something in the wiring of the house causing this?
Can I put some electrical buffering device between the audio unit and the outlet to keep this from happening? Currently it is only plugged into a simple surge protector.
Any thoughts?

Time to have an electrician out to look at things. Sounds like you may have too many things wired into a small circuit panel. Houses built in the early 70′s and before never anticipated the sheer quantity of electronics now used in most homes. Have them look at the voltage drop and how many circuits are there as well as do a load test. If there is plenty of voltage on the box, but inanadequate numbers of circuits, it would be worth the money to have them wire in a dedicated circuit for your theater (do a 20 amp circuit if possible).
I’d also have them test to make sure you have adequate voltage to the house. You might be surprised to see how many neighborhoods have old transformers on the street that are on the edge of failure and are supplying inadequate line voltage. In that case, the electric company will come out and replace the transformer.
At the least, it is annoying…at the worst, having an electrical system that is on the bare edge of overload all the time is dangerous.
What you are describing is known in the industry as Dirty Power. Its a huge problem in the industy and most consumers have it. When you’ve got an older house, like you mentioned the wiring within the house isn’t the same as current wiring configurations which reduce electronic noise and interference.
I deal with this everyday as a trainer for Monster Cable. We talk about dirty power all the time, and have a few options for reducing or eliminating the problem.
There are a few options to try:
Most expensive option – Have an electrician come out and re-run most of the wiring in your home to new EMI (electromagnetic interference) Free wiring – Very expensive and most electricians won’t even offer it because you pretty much have to rewire the entire house.
Another re-wire option. Have an electrician come out and run a Ground check on your outlets. They can find which one’s are the worst and rewire those.
Power Protection Option – you mentioned that you are plugged into a simple surge protector. This is another problem. All of your devices that are plugged in their share noise (interference when powered). Go to Best Buy or Circuit City or Amazon.com if you don’t have one next to you, and talk to one of their home theater specialists about Monster Power Centers. I’d look at a few of them that have a minimum of STAGE 2 CLEAN POWER. They are designed to reduce or eliminate what you described, plus enhance the picture and sound of devices connected to them through filtration built into them. They start at $ 200, and are recommended by all Home Theater Sales associates in every store for any home theater system to enhance performance and increase the life of your products. I live near an appartment complex which has hundreds of units, which all affect my power, so when I added the Monster Power products, everything that you mentioned disappeared from my home. I’d also look at their smaller units for other rooms in the home as well so that they don’t interfere with the rest of the house. I purchased one called the HT200 ($ 60) its a 2 outlet unit for subwoofers, but I put it on my washing machine so that when it cycles it doesn’t disturb my sytem.
I know this was a lot of information, but I hope it helped. I just thought of a website where you can get amazing deals on monster products too. Check out http://www.shopallmonster.com, they’ve got the $ 500 power center right now for $ 100 refurbished.
Good Luck, and feel free to email me through my profile, or check out my blog and email me if you have other questions.
Re-wire the house it’s the best, maybe in the futuer u will add more things to your home, even the smallest thing can change evrething in ur home, for example simple christmas lights. When u and if u sell that’s profit in your pocket
